Some airlines have started to provide military personal a pass on expensive baggage fees during official travels after Sen. Hilary Clinton’s request to relax baggage fees for military personnel.
Many veterans groups and others have criticized the move badly as they considering it a financial burden on airlines. However, many airlines have announced about waiving all or most baggage fees for the U.S. military active members during their official travels. On Friday, AirTran Airways, Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines announced that they were waving of baggage fees for U.S. military active members during their official travel.
American Airlines, Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines have already started waiving their fee earlier this week.
Several airlines have been struggling with the increased baggage fees and high cost of jet fuel implementation this year. While some military personnel have said that they were asked to pay almost $300 for their duffel bags that used to include vital combat equipment and body armor.
Earlier this month, Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander, George Lisicki sent a letter to the Air Transport Association that asked for a break for service service members.
Similarly, Sen. Hillary Clinton sent a letter to six major airlines and Defense Secretary Robert Gates and asked to waive of baggage fees for the active service members.
According to David Castleveter, a spokesman for transport association, it is expected that most airlines will drop or at least modify their fees for active service men during official travel.
