On Tuesday, Malaysia Airlines introduces a new service that allows passengers to make and receive calls on their cell phones while air traveling.

According to Malaysia Airlines, the service also allows passengers to send and receive text messages and they can send and receive e-mails by using their Blackberry type of devices.

Customers can safely use their mobile phone without affecting the aircraft systems and ground telecommunication networks while traveling, the statement from Malaysia Airline says.

Currently the service is available on a single Boeing 777-200 aircraft that goes to some selected European, Asian and Australian destination on different days.

Malaysia Airlines’ Chief executive Idris Jala said that if the system proved successful, it would be installed on all wide-bodied aircraft of the Malaysia Airlines by next year.

“The service is being introduced on a trial basis for our customers’ comfort and we are hopeful that our business and leisure passengers will definitely appreciate this new service.”

Just like any other international roaming call, the users will have to pay for it on their regular phone bills to their own service providers.

It will be encouraged if passengers switch their phones to vibrate mode or silent while operating them in the aircraft, the company said.
